What is mindfulness based therapy?

Mindfulness means being in the here-and-now, instead of being lost in thought. Stepping back from our thoughts can bring immediate relief, because it's often our thoughts that cause our suffering. More importantly, it can help you do what you really want to, instead of being yanked around by your passing thoughts and feelings. And when you do what you really want, life gets better.

To learn mindfulness, it can be very helpful to meditate. But you don't have to - you can also practice mindfulness "on the go".

Nowadays, mindfulness is part of many psychological therapies, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. As a Clinical Psychologist, I am trained in a range of therapies, and have undertaken further specialist training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. I have written two books on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

More importantly, I have been practising mindfulness and meditation daily for almost a decade, and have felt their benefits in my own life.This means that I understand "from the inside" how they work, what they can do, and how they can be woven together with other therapeutic techniques.

In particular, we might combine mindfulness techniques with: 

  • practical plans for changing your life

  • exploration of your past, in order to understand where your difficulties come from

  • self-compassion - learning to be kinder to yourself.

So, while we'll start with mindfulness, we won't stop there.
